Last week I reviewed xtimeline and referenced dipity, so this week I thought I’d take a closer look. Wow, I’m sure glad I did because there’s all sorts of fun to be had!
One of the first things I noticed is that in addition to using dipity to create a timeline, you can integrate your timelines to “Your Life”, “Your Blog” and “Your Class”. Nice!

Dipity connects “Your Life” to popular sites like YouTube, twitter, flickr, Pandora and others. For example, I added a feed from my Pandora account to my timeline and dipity displayed when I created new Pandora radio stations. I noted that a bunch were created when I was focused on writing. Adding this feed was truly easy!
Another feature I really like is the Flipbook view. Earlier this week I saw a reference to a meme here and here and wanted to learn more about the history of memes. Somehow I was led to a dipity Internet Memes timeline and viewed it with their flipbook view-very visually engaging!
Dipity has additional mashups, TimeTube and Tickr. You’ve probably guessed the first is a mashup with YouTube and the latter with Flickr. TimeTube creates a timeline of videos. Tickr creates one of images and adds a nifty Google map with tagged locations. Dipity’s blog gives more description and offers samples of each mashup.

You can see I was quite taken with dipity. The combination of lots of options for personal and professional use and ease of use make it a winning combination!

Hmmm…can you set up accounts for other people? Not to be weird, but the first thing that popped into my head was funerals. When my aunt passed away two years ago I put together a memorial site for her, and it was a challenge to make a timeline.
Great question. I’m not really sure what the answer is so I checked out their terms of service (http://www.dipity.com/tos). According to their terms an account creator is responsible for all actions taken on their account. The terms don’t expressly say you can’t make an account for someone else.
Funerals, huh, that is odd.
Just kidding. It makes sense to remember people who touch our hearts. It could even be used as a genealogy tool. With a shared login/password, multiple family members could contribute.
Hey guys, thanks for the post! I love Dipity too, but I’m the Product Manager, so I guess I don’t count :).
Laurie - you can create timelines about anything or anyone your heart desires. That’s a really sweet new use case for Dipity I haven’t heard of before. Write us when you’re done and I’ll see if we can’t feature her life on the front page.
Hi BK,
My Aunt passed away almost two years ago, and I made a memorial site that lasted one year. So, the site is no longer active, however, I do remember wanting to create a timeline but being unable to find a good tool to do so (looks like dipity is perfect). I am guessing more and more people will be creating online memorials, so I think this is a good thing to know about!
